Maintenance Tips For High Altitude Vehicles

Let's face it: living as we do among the majestic Rocky Mountains, it can be hard to resist the urge to traverse that high-altitude terrain.

Our vehicles bring us from the foothills to the peaks, and just everywhere in between. Our Boulder auto shop has seen it all when it comes to providing repairs and service on those vehicles that help us explore the high altitude and mountains of Colorado.

Which makes us somewhat of an expert on the subject of auto maintenance for those mountain-friendly vehicles.

In this blog, we're going to explore a few of these maintenance tips to help you get the most out of your explorations and avoid problems.

However, should a problem occur, don't hesitate to visit The Shop Automotive — the premier Boulder auto shop which specializes in all makes and models, foreign and domestic.

We'll get you back on those mountain paths in no time! Without further ado, here are some mountain vehicle maintenance tips.

Check Fluids

It stands to reason that higher altitudes ultimately lead to more wear and tear on our vehicles — particularly in and around the engine.

This is especially true when traversing those high altitude slopes and mountainous terrains that we Coloradoans love to explore.

With that being said, it's imperative that every three to six months (or every 4,000-5,000 miles), you do the following:

  • Check/fill automatic transmission fluid
  • Check/fill power steering fluid
  • Check/fill engine coolant
  • Change the oil and filter
  • Check/replace air filter
  • Rotate all four tires

With these basic maintenance tips, your vehicle will be better equipped to handle the terrain and high altitude requirements.

Keep An Eye On

With great performance comes great responsibility — or something like that, anyway.

As you bring your trusted vehicle up, around, and over mountains, you will want to be wary of any potential issues before they turn into full-fledged problems.

The last thing you want to do is ignore a warning sight, sound, or light — that can only compound your issues and leave you stranded atop the peak.

Here are a few things to be wary of during your adventures:

  • Check tire pressure regularly
  • Maintain oil levels
  • Test blinkers, headlights, and bulbs
  • Maintain wiper fluid
  • Check for warning lights on dash
  • Test the battery
  • Inspect brake pads

It can be difficult to keep track of all of these maintenance to-do's, but part of being a responsible car owner is knowing exactly what shape your vehicle is in. Try to keep a log of maintenance records handy to help with organization.
